HE SPEAKS - RON BONK TALKS ABOUT HIS INDIE FILM, SHE KILLS

A couple of months back I was given a press release to post onto my site. 'What's this?' I said to myself, as soon as I saw it, 'She Kills? What type of film is that supposed to be?'. Then suddenly, before I could answer my own rhetorical question, the press release jumped up and ripped my own bloody face off. Well, not exactly ripped-ripped, per say. Or else I wouldn't be here. But it did intrigue me somewhat. Intrigued me so much that I posted the press release and interviewed it's director. Ron Bonk, its now over to you, pal.





1) What are your own origins, Ron?   I grew up loving movies of all types, but especially sci-fi and horror. "Star Wars" began my true love of movies, though it started in motion with "Jaws" the year before. "Dawn of the Dead" made me want to make my own movies, and tell my own tales, but I didn't actively pursue making anything until after I finished college (for criminal justice, Ha!).

2) What inspired the creation of ‘She Kills’?   A fellow filmmaker I work with often, Jonathan Straiton, came to me wanting to do a double-feature Grindhouse style movie. His idea was that both segments would have a STD horror theme going for them, and I loved the idea. We both had our plots right there on the spot. They eventually developed into two totally different movies, mine: "She Kills", and his: "Night of Something Strange".

3) In your own words how would you describe this story?   A sweet innocent woman named Sadie has her innocence torn away from her by a gang of hooligans called "The Touchers". But in the process of being victimized, she quickly discovers her nether regions hold strange powers which eventually she uses to her benefit as her thirst for revenge grows.

For the most part it's shot in true 70s Grindhouse style, and doesn't hold back with the gore, the sex, the outrageous moments, etc.

4) If this film omitted a collective odor, what would it smell like and why?   Ha! It smells like an old 16mm film print at the early stages of vinegar syndrome, resting in a box filled with full bloom roses. Sniff-Sniff! Lovely. 

5) What song would you say best represents your wares and why?   You mean which film best represents SRS as a whole? I'd say "She Kills" conveniently enough. It's gruesome. It has a lot of humor (intentional and - well not in this movie's case (ie the unintentional humor was intentional, make sense?) - unintentional). It has sex. It has violence. It has serious moments. It explores ideas and plots you don't see in the average movie. It's entertaining. And it's different and far removed from Hollywood movies.

6) If you could get a known celebrity – either living or dead – to promote this flick, who would you choose, and why would you want this particular person?   Jeesh. Tough question. But I'd go with Quentin Tarantino, because I think it's a movie he would enjoy and get the references, and in turn, if promoted to his fans, they would be the right audience for it.

7) What were the main obstacles you had to contend with along the way?   Money and Time. More money could help make the movies easier to shoot, and more time with the cast and crew and locations to make them right. The productions always seemed rushed, and sometimes we have to take what we can get at the time or risk not getting a scene or the movie done. More time especially would allow me to make the movies as I envisioned from the start, instead of compromised versions.

8) If ‘SK' had a motto, what do you think it would be?   Hell hath no fury like a woman scorned.
