On the 28th of April, 2022, Abrams released a 224-page hardcover book that takes us behind the scenes of the latest Batman movie. Entitled, 'The Art of The Batman', this official companion piece includes designs, storyboards, commentary, and interviews with several members of the cast and crew in order to give us an insider's look at the film's production process. Here, check out the following four reasons why you should pick up a copy.
1) It's Stylish: Throughout the years, Batman has worn a variety of different costumes that range from the super-campy all the way to the ultra-butch. But now, in his latest film, Batman's gone noir -- neo-noir -- to be more precise, which is a derivative of an atmospheric cinematic style that was predominantly utilized in the 1940s and the 1950s, named, 'film noir' (although more modern with its approach). So, if you like the sound of that, then I'm sure you are going to like the look of this book, as it's full of paintings, photographs, designs, and sketches that reflect the film's style all through its evolution.
2) It's Factual: Did you know that Batman's outfit (for the film) was based on a Russian pressure suit as well as the costume he wore in the Frank Miller classic, 'Batman: Year One'? Or the fact, that several sets were initially designed using VR technology (virtual reality), so the filmmakers could then walk through those sets before they were ever built? If not, don't worry, because neither did I! Not until I picked up 'The Art of The Batman'.
3) It's Written by Someone Connected With the Film Industry: The writer of this book, James Field, is an English author who's been working in the film industry since 2006. Most notably, as a Production Liaison for two movies devised by DC Films, 'The Batman' and 'The Flash'. He's also been able to divide his time between marketing and writing for film, television, and audio, and in 2016/17, he became the International Winner of the Nickelodeon Writing Program. Along with James's work on this book, Matt Reeves has likewise contributed to it as well. Although, in his case, he's written a foreword that explains what motivated him to direct the latest Batman epic.
4) It's Dramatic: Well, let's face it, 'The Batman' is a fairly dramatic film. So it should come as no surprise that 'The Art of The Batman' is a fairly dramatic book! Not only because we get another chance to see some of the cast while they were making the aforementioned movie, including people like Robert Pattinson (Bruce Wayne), Zoe Kravitz (Catwoman), and Colin Farrell (Penguin), but in addition to this, we also get to see the development of the story, the characters, the sets, and an assortment of associated vehicles, costumes, and props (starting from the initial design stage all the way to the final film). To me, that's dramatic.
