FOUR FILM LOCATIONS FEATURED IN THE THIRD MAN

In 1949, the British Lion Film Corporation released a fantastic film about an American pulp novelist who travels to Vienna (post-World War II), only to find himself investigating the mysterious death of an old friend. The film is called, 'The Third Man', and it was directed by the English filmmaker, Carol Reed, and stars Joseph Cotten (the pulp novelist), Orson Welles (the old friend), Alida Valli (the love interest), and Trevor Howard (the English major). Vienna Central Cemetery, Simmering, Vienna, Austria

When the film begins, Joseph Cotten's character, Holly Martins, arrives in Vienna and is told that the friend he intends to visit has passed away and is currently being buried at the local cemetery. This cemetery is colloquially called Wiener Zentralfriedhof, and it's the final resting place for several famous real-life composers, including Ludwig van Beethoven, Franz Schubert, and Johannes Brahms. The grave belonging to Holly's friend can be located in section 43A, which is opposite a grave with the name, Frau Marie Figge.

(The Doorway Where Harry Lime First Appears)

Over halfway through the film, Holly discovers that his friend, Harry Lime, as played by Orson Welles, isn't dead because he spots him hiding in a dimly lit doorway. This doorway acts as the opening to a baroque corner house facing Mölker Steig, Vienna, which originally had a multi-bent facade dating back to the 18th century. In August, 2017, the house underwent extensive renovations and now looks somewhat different.

At one point in the film, Holly meets Harry and they both speak face-to-face while they take a quick trip on a Ferris wheel. The locals call this Ferris wheel the Wiener Riesenrad, and it was constructed in 1897 by the English engineer, Lieutenant Walter Bassett Bassett, in order to celebrate the Golden Jubilee of Emperor Franz Josef I. It's one of the earliest Ferris wheels ever built and it still runs to this very day.

'The Third Man' concludes with a dramatic chase between Holly, Harry, and the authorities down below ground in the city's sewer system. Most of the filming for this sequence, aside from a few shots recorded on a stage at London Film Studios, Shepperton, UK, was confined to the accessible area in and around the sewer's overflow chamber beneath Karlsplatz as well as a couple of tunnels leading to the Vienna River. Today, people can actually take a tour of this sewer, but only during certain times of the year.
